Boyd Park Playground is in need of an upgrade. The need for this upgrade was a recommendation and action of the Outer Circle Railway Management Plan which was endorsed by Council in March 2019. The community feedback generated during the development of the Management Plan highlighted the need for an upgrade to the playground and an expansion to introduce nature play space and additional elements for intergenerational use.
A concept design has been developed which incorporates an expansion on the existing play equipment, the inclusion of all abilities access elements, nature play and intergenerational play equipment. Additional social facilities have also been introduced and as the community requested, a public toilet will be constructed in the park to the north of the playground.
Concept Design
This design builds upon the existing playground and planting, to create a richer and more sensory and accessible play space. The design includes references to the Outer Circle Railway with tracks to follow through the landscape, and interpretive elements to be built into low retaining walls and panels. The largest play structure under the existing shade sail harks back to 'Joyous Gard' - the name of a property that existed on this site early in the settled history of Murrumbeena. 'Joyous Gard' was the name of Lancelot's castle, and is a great prompt for imaginative play. The legacy of Boyd family will be included with artistic inclusions in seats and a custom-built cubby.
The existing snake and Snake and Ladders board are retained in the design but enhanced with a new gameboard, colourful landscapes painted onto the side of the snake, sensory posts, and sculptural grasses. A new pebbled area with balancing beams and hollows to collect natural materials rounds out the space behind the snake.
Older kids will find challenges in the custom-designed climbing pieces, and places to relax under trees. Amenity for visitors is enhanced with three shelters, a variety of seats, additional tree planting, and an automated Toilet Block.
Thank you to everyone who completed the survey and provided feedback. A report was prepared for Council and the concept design for the playground was endorsed by Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 7 June 2022. You can view a copy of the report here.
