Carnegie Swim Centre Redevelopment

Carnegie Swim Centre Redevelopment Options Consultation

Carnegie Swim Centre is a much-loved part of Glen Eira where many memories have been made for more than 50 years. The buildings and pools are now at the end of their serviceable life and need to be replaced.

Our community is growing, and we need to broaden the facilities at the Carnegie Swim Centre to cater for the additional demand for aquatic and leisure facilities. In doing so, we intend to retain the essential elements of Carnegie Swim Centre, as we know that is important.

The redevelopment options include a mix of indoor and outdoor pools and activities. The intent is to retain the local pool characteristics in keeping with the previous community feedback. The redevelopment will see Carnegie Swim Centre become an all-year-round leisure facility, with a range of services for a broader section of the community. The redevelopment will enable us to provide programs, such as learn-to- swim, and targeted programs to meet specific community health needs, delivering a range of physical and mental health benefits.

A redeveloped Centre would also improve the general experience for the users, support opportunities to enhance community feel and connectedness, and would also ensure that the centre remains environmentally sustainable.

We have previously consulted the community to understand what was important in any redevelopment of the centre. We heard that people love the community vibe and nostalgic feel of the Centre, and wish for this to be retained. This feedback has been used to inform future designs. Some images have been prepared by an architect, which are to proposed scale and size.

From 17 October 2019 to the end of January 2020, we are undertaking consultation on the concept designs for the redevelopment. Three options are currently proposed, and we want to find out which option the community prefers. You can see the options in the Document Library (on the right).

Have your say from 17 October 2019 to 31 January 2020:

  • Complete the online survey or pick up a hard copy at the customer service centre
  • The results and Council decision will be published on the Have your Say project page in early 2020

  • Three redevelopment options are being proposed, and input is now sought from the Glen Eira community to inform which redevelopment option is preferred.

Option A – Redeveloped Swim Centre with indoor and outdoor pools and beach volleyball
Option B – Redeveloped Swim Centre with indoor and outdoor pools and an outdoor diving pool
Option C – Close existing Centre, re-establish open space and investigate options to extend GESAC

    This survey has two sections:
1)A bit about you – to ensure we hear from a cross-section of people across Glen Eira
