Tell Council in what ways is Glen Eira a good place to live and in what ways is it not so good?
almost 6 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded.Tell us what you like about living in Glen Eiramalnoralmost 6 years agoChange the Zoning Laws
The new residential zoning laws that were slipped in with no consultation with the community have been a disaster and are very quickly destroying so much of what was good about living in Glen Eira. Those living in the Neighborhood Residential Zones are nicely protected, but this has simply concentrated the development into the General Residential Zone. If you are unfortunate enough to live in the GRZ, (and I am sure that not one councillor lives in these zones), then the liveability and character has been ripped out of these areas, turning them into high density urban ghettos.
3van316almost 6 years agoTotal Elsternwick Library upgrade
Simply this facility could be so much more, a real active hub for the community. Look at the impressive St. Kilda library, an incredible community resource - showing a library not only keeping pace with society changes but leading them, brilliant. It is an investment in the community not just a service to be provided, worthy of serious consideration from an enlightened council.
1JMCalmost 6 years agoImprove Elsternwick Library opening hours.
Currently it's almost impossible for working people to use the Elsternwick library as it closes at 6pm during the week and on those busy Saturday mornings it is only open from 10am to 1pm.
1Kooyong38almost 6 years agoGlen Eira has some great parks & public places, but council could do more & be more innovative.
Make Glen Eira a more liveable, resilient and inclusive city for all ages & abilities. 1. Improve & expand cycle routes/paths and bike parking facilities in activity centres & community facilities. 2. Develop an Urban Forestry Plan to increase tree canopy, biodiversity & mitigate urban heat island effect. 3. Use storm water & rain water wisely to develop water sensitive green infrastructure across the city
7bellacasaalmost 6 years agoZoning that supports residents
It would be great if the council could ensure that rooming houses with large numbers of short term residents could not be established in the middle of family housing - it has an adverse impact on the lives of residents

The new pocket parks planned or already built do or will do little to nothing to address Glen Eira's open space shortfall. Larger areas need to be purchased and returned as usable open space.

Glen Eira needs a tree protection policy to help preserve worthy trees
3Chris Ralmost 6 years agoMore Footpath Space
While I don't really like higher density and taller buildings, it appears that this will be the norm in the future. If they are having to be done, can we have wider footpaths to allow shops to have space to put tables and chairs and to allow for trees to be planted to provide natural shade.

1Sevenalmost 6 years agoRoad congestion due to massive apartment construction.
Even with the rail lines gone the road congestion in and around Carnegie is only going to get worse with all the multi story developments. Widen the streets or make parking on one side of the road only. The car, bus and rubbish collection vehicles make for cramped street travel, frustrated drivers and home owners. Something has to give Glen Eira Council!

What do you think Glen Eira's priorities should be over the next three to five years?
almost 6 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. What do you think Glen Eira's priorities should be over the next three to five years?brettalmost 6 years agoClimate Change
I would like to see our Council lead the way on taking action on climate change. I don't believe that enough is being done in any of the following areas: renewable energy, food security, water storage & harvesting, reduction in car movements, council leadership, divestment, energy efficiency, building design, reducing consumption / waste management, changing attitudes & thinking, provision of community areas to come together and move forward - Glen Eira's current high consumption mode of living is not sustainable - in our city we currently have no water, no food, no biodiversity and no energy - and all that we give to others is pollution & waste. This situation is simply not sustainable either now or moving into the future. We are completely reliant on others that we have no relationship with. It's time to lead and move out of our industrial past.
7Stephen R Pearsonalmost 6 years agoMore Sporting Facilities
The City of Glen Eira is in desperate need of more sporting facilities, both for our kids and adults alike. The project to open up the Caulfield Racecourse to allow for the construction of multiple sporting facilities needs to begin as soon as possible. In addition to this existing schools and sporting clubs need to start working together with the aid of council to get the most out of the existing facilities in Glen Eira. As much as there is a need for many other facilities that make our lives easier, if our kids do not have a location to play organised sport then they will remain on the couch and child-hood obesities numbers will continue to grow. Without juniors, local sporting clubs will slowly die and the kids that live in Glen Eira and want to play sport will play be forced to play in other councils.
1PeterGalmost 6 years agoInfrastructure and open space.
The council has made efforts to improve the number of parks and upgrade some of the community facilities. These would be two good continuing policies for the next three to five years. While many in our council area have good jobs and apparently expensive lifestyles, it must be obvious that others are living modestly. Facilities like libraries, sport and recreation places, and parks that are easy to navigate and well lit help locals stay active and feel part of the community. The Caulfield Racecourse public land and the difficulties in using it have been well documented. But we should be ready to take advantage of any breakthroughs in improving its public enjoyment.

Residents who don't use GESAC should not have to subsidise losses. It should be fully funded user pays.

Tell Council what are the things in Glen Eira that you would spend Council revenue on.
over 5 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded.Tell Council what are the things in Glen Eira that you would spend Council revenue on.Pat Woodingalmost 6 years agoImprove all-day parking in Elsternwick
It is difficult to run a business when staff have to leave meetings and appointments to move their cars. Perhaps permit parking after 6pm would be an answer as 2 hour spots are often free all day. This would also help commuters.
0Pat Woodingalmost 6 years agoImprove Pedestrian Safety by providing crossings - Glen Eira , Orrong, Glen Huntly Rds, for the elderly & school children .
I'm conscious as a driver that pedestrians are at risk on these main roads as there are insufficient pedestrian crossings. In particular near schools. Traffic light controlled crossings would slow down traffic and make the roads safer for everyone. This review would encompass all roads in the City of Glen Eira.

0Pat Woodingalmost 6 years agoOld large trees on nature strips should be review and replaced with similar but smaller natives.
Falling branches and debris causes slipping hazards and obstacles. This is a concern for the elderly. And potentially damaging garden fences and furniture.
1brettalmost 6 years agoCar Share & Bikes
We need more actual dedicated bike lanes (that cars cannot park in) and more priority for pedestrians and cyclists. We need to have a clear target to get the cars off the roads - so setting a clear target on increasing the number of car share spots around our city is also a good start.
