Thank you for joining us for this online Community Safety Forum. The purpose of this forum is to further understand the communities confidence and feelings of safety within Glen Eira. We will be doing this by examining a key findings of a survey conducted in November 2019 – Community Confidence and Feelings of Safety, with Glen Eira’s Community Voice panel (roughly 500 members representative of Glen Eira). A brief background for this project is provided below.

Thank you for joining us for this online Community Safety Forum. The purpose of this forum is to further understand the communities confidence and feelings of safety within Glen Eira. We will be doing this by examining a key findings of a survey conducted in November 2019 – Community Confidence and Feelings of Safety, with Glen Eira’s Community Voice panel (roughly 500 members representative of Glen Eira). Background

In developing the 2017-2021 Council and Community Plan, community safety was identified by the community as a key issue. As a result, the Community Safety Plan 2018-2022 was developed to include a focus on community safety. This plan overseas two, two year Action Plans, with the 2018 - 2020 action plan due to be completed this June. The new Action Plan for 2020-2022 currently being developed.

As part of the current plan, action item 1.3.2 (on page 6), Council undertook a community research project in November 2019, into the community’s confidence and feelings of safety. This forum seeks further information on current feelings of safety within Glen Eira to build on the survey findings and inform the new Action Plan.

A summary of the Community Voice survey findings, as well as the Community Safety Plan 2018 - 2022 and the Community Safety Action Plan 2019 - 2020 are provided in the document library on the left.

    Finding

    41% of survey respondents stated that that agreed or strongly agreed they lived in a close-knit neighbourhood yet 63% stated they could trust their neighbours, 69% said they felt people in their neighbourhood would be willing to help them, and 70% said they would raise attention from their neighbours if they were in trouble.


    Question 1a: Why do you think people in Glen Eira are less likely to think they live in a close-knit neighbourhood when they identify high levels of various forms of community connection and assistance?

    Finding

    Survey respondents identified news programs on TV and word of mouth as their two primary crime and safety news sources.

    58% of survey respondents said they had not felt worried about being the victim of online fraud in the last year.


    Question 3: The results show us almost half of respondents aren’t worried, and half are. Why do you think there is this split within the Glen Eira Community?

    The majority of respondents stated they’ve never avoided leaving the house during the day (92%) or at night (80%) because of a worry about burglary.

    Finding

    Half of respondents said they’d worried about their home being burgled in the last year. Of this group, 46% undertook some form of action or mitigation to address this worry. After taking these actions, 51% felt ‘a little’ safer. Overall 29% of respondents said they actions would make no difference.


    Question 5a: Why do you think over a quarter of respondents feel that their personal actions to mitigate home burglary would make no difference? 

    Question 5b: Given a large number of respondents indicated they had concerns, why do you think that only a small number of respondents are willing to implement mitigation strategies?

    The top two things that helped survey respondents feel safe in their neighbourhood and parks were lighting and having other people around.

    Finding

    Most respondents (73%) have not felt worried about being robbed or harmed in public in the last year. Most common precautions were to avoid using certain streets or areas at night, avoiding using certain parks, or sporting grounds, and avoiding using public transport.

    28% of respondents identified people in speeding cars as a major problem in the local community
