Community engagement is about the Glen Eira community shaping Council directions, decisions and actions that affect, impact or interest them. We have developed a draft Community Engagement Strategy 2022-2026 which sets out our approach to community engagement, ensuring the decisions we make are well-informed and transparent.

The draft Strategy outlines who the Glen Eira community is and what we have heard so far about what they value and how they like to be engaged. It captures the community’s own vision for its engagement and incorporates that vision into six strategic themes which acknowledge that the key to successful community engagement is a productive and collaborative partnership between Council and the community.

The strategic themes are:

  1. Reach a diverse range of people by taking a more targeted approach.
  2. Connecting with young people and children.
  3. Provide convenient and easy engagement options.
  4. Community participation in deliberative engagement.
  5. Report back to the community.
  6. Evaluate and share lessons to improve practice.

Over the next four years, we aim to increase public participation in Council’s decision-making by addressing each of these strategic themes through well-planned and thorough engagement with the community and our stakeholders.

  • Council endorses the Community Engagement Strategy 2022-2026

At its meeting on 5 April 2022, Council endorsed the Community Engagement Strategy 2022-2026. The Strategy aims to deliver on our promise to be open, transparent and inclusive in the engagement that we do with the community. We’ll do this through the six strategic actions that the Strategy focuses on:
🌟 Reach a diverse range of people by taking a more tailored approach.
🌟 Connect with children and young people.
🌟 Provide easy and convenient engagement options.
🌟 Support community participation in deliberative engagement.
🌟 Report back to the community.
🌟 Evaluate and share lessons to improve practice.

The development of the Strategy was informed by extensive engagement with the community, beginning with a Communty Voice survey in 2020, through the engagement that was undertaken to develop the Council Plan 2021-2025, in collaboration with the Community Engagement Advisory Committee, the Youth Advisory Committee and leaders from our culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Once drafted, we again sought feedback from Communtiy Voice and the broader public. A summary report of the final stage of engagement which shows how feedback was integrated into the Strategy is available in the document library.

  • Informing the draft Strategy

In August 2020 we asked Community Voice a series of questions to understand how we can better engage with the Glen Eira community. Then, in May and June 2021, we undertook an extensive period of engagement with the broad community to inform the Council Plan 2021-2025. Overwhelmingly, the highest priority for the community was around well-informed and transparent decision-making.

In July, we ran a workshop with our Community Engagement Advisory Committee, where we asked for their ideas on how to improve community engagement across Glen Eira, including what is and isn’t working well, and what is missing or could be improved.

All these responses have informed the draft Community Engagement Strategy 2022-2026.
