martinabout 5 years agoSafe cycle routs to schools
Developing a network of 'safe' cycle lanes to schools, a combination of shared footpaths and dedicated cycle lanes, could reduce the number of cars on the road during the morning peak, increase the level of activity for kids and young parents and build a healthier community. Although there is a network of 'cycle lanes' the reality is these are no more than a painted line and if you look at how these are used (for instance outside of McKinnon school) 60-80% of the length of the cycle lane, is totally blocked by parked cars, meaning cyclists are weaving in and out of the traffic to pass parked cars.

Pedestrians and people on bicycles make a more sensible mix than cars and cyclists. If people were aware that using a footpath as a shared path was acceptable, and some simple rules were published through a good campaign, far more people (and kids) would use bikes. It's not complicated - maximum speed, ring a bell when approaching or before passing a pedestrian and being conscious that people or cars can move in front of you quickly, and it will all work well.
