Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2020 - 2022

Glen Eira City Council will develop the new Reconciliation Action Plan working in partnership with a Reconciliation Advisory Group made up of Traditional Owners, community leaders and community members, an internal Reconciliation Working Group and overseen by Traditional Owners.

The new RAP will cover a two-year period commencing in early 2020 and a draft will be submitted for endorsement to Reconciliation Australia in the coming months.

The draft will then be made available to the Glen Eira community for review and all feedback will be considered for inclusion. The draft Reconciliation Action Plan will then go to Council for endorsement.

In 2015, the City of Glen Eira began to steadily build momentum on its commitment to, and focus on reconciliation. Two years later, Glen Eira started to formalise this commitment through Reconciliation Australia's RAP Program. This structured framework is based on five dimensions: race relations; equality and equity; institutional integrity; unity and historical acceptance and three pillars: relationships; respect and opportunities.


Glen Eira's City Council's vision for reconciliation is a unified, respectful and thriving community that embraces Australia's First Peoples for their experiences of the past, their resilience in the present and their aspirations for the future.


In October 2018, the Glen Eira Reconciliation Action Plan 2018 - 2020 Innovate was endorsed by Council and many actions have already been achieved including:

  • Celebration of National Reconciliation Week
  • Participation in The Long Walk and Close the Gap
  • Flags erected at the Town Hall in the main and garden entrances and Council chambers
  • Acknowledgements, Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies for Council events
  • Indigenous Hip Hop workshop held in partnership at Bentleigh Secondary College.
  • Recruitment of an Aboriginal Civic and Cultural Officer
  • Cultural Awareness Training for: Councillors and all Council staff
  • Implementation and communication of cultural protocol document
  • Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property training
  • Koorie Chill Out – January 26 family event
  • Louisa Briggs Day – celebration of important Boon Wurrung ancestor
  • You Can’t Ask That Reconciliation Week staff event with prominent Indigenous panellists
  • Indigenous History Report of Glen Eira – initial stage has been completed

As we develop our second RAP, the following actions are in progress

  • Cultural audit of the Town Hall
  • Expand Council's web pages on Aboriginal heritage and reconciliation
  • Establish or redevelop a Learning Stone site.
  • Consult with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff on employment strategies.
  • Develop an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff recruitment and retention strategy.

The new Reconciliation Action Plan seeks to further establish Glen Eira as a culturally safe place to live, work and visit.
