Alma Village Pop-Up Park

Council is seeking your opinion on the proposed temporary pop-up park within Alma Village, Caulfield North at the intersection of Alma Road and Orrong Crescent.

The pop-up park seeks to revitalise the village, making it a pedestrian friendly area that can encourage social activity and events. This will be supported by a separate plan to increase canopy tree and urban plantings in Alma Village and Orrong Crescent. The Pop-Up Park will be installed as a temporary trial for 6 months, with further community consultation to follow after the trial period.

Similar installations have been undertaken across Melbourne and have been successful in reinvigorating spaces for both communities and local traders.

The COVID‐19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of open space as an essential element of urban life. A consequence of our remote and flexible working is that our local spaces and parks are becoming increasingly important in providing both respite and social connection. This shift has highlighted the importance of providing new and improved open spaces; especially in areas where there are shortfalls in access to these spaces.

The pop-up park will require a section of Orrong Crescent to be closed to vehicle traffic; and while this will remove a popular short-cut between Alma Road and Inkerman Road, it will create safer and quieter streets with only local traffic. Car parking numbers will remain the same with new spaces being created on Alma Road.

Highlights of the concept design include:

  • Picnic tables and seating to meet and socialise
  • Cube seating
  • Kids play area
  • Relocated car spaces along Alma Road
  • Bike path connecting Alma Road and Orrong Crescent

The concept design can be viewed from this page with the community engagement period ending on 4 September 2022.
