Engagement summary

Thank you to all Community Voice members who completed the May 2026 survey.

The survey was open from 18 May to 7 June 2026 and focused on one topic: helping shape Glen Eira City Council’s next Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2026–28.

We are at the early stages of developing the plan, and your feedback will help identify practical actions that strengthen respect, understanding and connections with First Nations peoples and cultures across our community.

Respondents were evenly split by gender (57 men, 54 women, 1 non-binary person and 2 people who preferred not to say). Most participants were aged 55–74 years. Responses were received from across Glen Eira, with the highest numbers from Elsternwick, Carnegie, Bentleigh East and Bentleigh. Diversity data showed 38 participants were born overseas, 33 identified as being from a multicultural background, 17 spoke a language other than English at home, 12 identified as a person with disability, 10 identified as LGBTIQA+, 7 were carers and 1 was a First Nations person.

The infographic shows that 69 per cent of members said it is important or very important for Council to take an active role in reconciliation, and 46 per cent reported some level of familiarity with Reconciliation Action Plans. Key indicators of reconciliation in action included strong relationships between First Nations peoples and the wider community (46 per cent), visible recognition and truth-telling (44 per cent), greater understanding of First Nations culture and history (42 per cent), and meaningful engagement with Traditional Owner Groups (40 per cent). Responses about who is leading reconciliation were mixed, with 30 per cent not having heard of or participated in initiatives, 29 per cent identifying other organisations, 28 per cent identifying a mix of Council and other organisations, and 6 per cent identifying Council alone. The survey snapshot highlights mixed levels of awareness and participation in reconciliation, alongside broad support for Council-led action. The top priorities identified for the Reconciliation Action Plan were acknowledging history and supporting truth-telling, caring for Country and the environment, and learning about First Nations history and culture.
