New lighting installation for Elsternwick ✨

We’re planning a creative lighting installation for Elsternwick Plaza to make the space more welcoming and vibrant after dark.

We’re seeking community input to shape the lighting design principles and the preferred location for the installation.

Creative lighting can transform public spaces at night, using light, colour and design to create an inviting atmosphere where people feel comfortable to spend time. A more welcoming Elsternwick Plaza can support evening activity, local businesses and a stronger sense of safety.

This project is partially funded by the Victorian Government’s Multicultural Business Precinct Revitalisation Program.

Have your say

We’re at the very start of this project, and community feedback will help shape the brief for a public tender, where a contractor will be selected to design and build the lighting.

Early input means community priorities can be built into the project from the beginning.

Have your say by Tuesday 16 June.

What's fixed

Fixed design principles

Some requirements are set by the funding and can’t be changed. The lighting must:

  • Reflect our cultural diversity

Celebrate Elsternwick’s cultural diversity in a respectful and inclusive way, without focusing on any single culture.

  • Support night time activity

Make the plaza feel welcoming after dark, encouraging people to spend time there and supporting local businesses in the evening.

  • Be built to last

Be durable, energy‑efficient and easy to maintain, so it lasts for years to come.

What community can influence

You can help shape:

Draft design principles

We’ve drafted three additional design principles and we need your help to let us know what's the highest priority.
  • Celebrate Elsternwick’s heritage

The lighting should feel right for Elsternwick, reflecting the character of the area while creating a distinctive local place.

  • Be safe and easy to get around

Help people feel safe and make it easy to move through the area at night.

  • Be flexible for events and community use

Be flexible and adaptable over time to support events and seasonal activities.

Would a new lighting installation encourage you to spend time in Elsternwick Plaza after dark?
