Caring for our roads and paths
We know how much the Glen Eira community cares about safe, well-maintained roads and paths.
In 2025, you told us that footpaths and local roads were among your top five priorities for improvement. And in our annual Community Satisfaction Survey, Glen Eira continues to rate above the statewide average for the condition of local streets and footpaths.
What's the plan?📑
Council is responsible for 499 kilometres of roads, 832 kilometres of kerb and channel, and 868 kilometres of pathways. Every council must have a Road Management Plan to help us look after these valued assets.
The Plan explains how we keep roads and paths safe and accessible for everyone. It sets out how often we inspect roads and pathways, what counts as a defect, and how quickly we make repairs.
Noticed a road or footpath issue in your neighbourhood? Let us know so that we can fix it.
- Who is responsible for roads, paths, road structures and road infrastructure
- How we classify different types of roads and paths
- How we carry out road and path maintenance
- How often we inspect roads and paths
- How we decide when repairs are needed
- Private roads like driveways or access roads
- Public roads managed by VicRoads or private operators
- Parking management
- Utilities like gas or water
- Non-road infrastructure like pipes and cables
The Plan also doesn't cover our overall strategy or big-picture approach to managing roads, paths and assets.
- We’ve set clearer timeframes for fixing things like potholes, damaged signs, blocked drains and overgrown trees, so hazards are dealt with quickly and consistently.
- We’ve made it clearer which assets Council looks after, and which are managed by other authorities or property owners, so residents know who to contact.
- We now group roads into four categories, from major link roads to local lanes, and classify footpaths and bike paths by how often they’re used. This helps us prioritise maintenance and upgrades.
- We’ve used a new industry-standard template developed by the Municipal Association of Victoria.
- We've removed some technical content that wasn't related to road management.
We have kept our commitment to current service levels and will keep inspecting, maintaining and repairing roads and footpaths within the resources available to us.
Have your say💡
We regularly review our Road Management Plan and make sure to update it after each council election so it's still fit for purpose. Following a thorough review, we're proposing some small changes.
You can read the draft Plan in the document library, along with a summary of our review findings to see exactly what's changed.
