Closing the loop

Thank you very much to everyone who submitted a survey! Your feedback will help us improve our Youth Services, supporting local young people with better programs, services and activities.

We received 465 responses from young people aged 10-25, and talked to over 1,300 people at over 36 engagement events. Read on to learn more about the diverse experiences and ideas of young people in Glen Eira.

Who we heard from

A diverse range of local young people participated in the survey. The online survey had 335 responses, and our workshop with Valkstone Primary School had 130 participants. The below information represents the online survey responses.

Young people's thoughts about the future

Survey participants said the following are their top concerns for the future:

  • Money (54 per cent)
  • Relationships/friendships (46 per cent)
  • Education (36 per cent)
  • Health (33 per cent)
  • Housing (30 per cent)
  • Safety (30 per cent).

Young people said they are most excited for their future:

  • Careers and jobs (28 per cent)
  • University, school and learning (18 per cent)
  • Relationships, friends, family and community (14 per cent)
  • Travel and adventure (12 per cent).

Young people's health and wellbeing

Survey participants provided a rating of their overall wellbeing on a scale of 1 to 5 smiley faces.

Participants' wellbeing ratings were:

  • all participants' average rating was 3.8 out of 5
  • the average of 3.8 was fairly consistent across most ages and demographics
  • people that are transgender rated their wellbeing lower, averaging 2.5 out of 5.

Young people said the following things would improve their wellbeing the most:

  • Quality sleep (62 per cent)
  • Exercise (53 per cent)
  • Family and friend support (40 per cent)
  • Healthy eating (36 per cent).

Young people's community connections and inclusion

The survey participants were asked whether they felt safe, included, and heard:

  • 44 per cent said yes
  • 41 per cent said mostly
  • 13 per cent said sometimes
  • 2 per cent said rarely or no.

Survey participants were asked about how they spend time with each other.

The most popular places to spend time together were:

  • At home or friends' houses (71 per cent)
  • Parks (51 per cent)
  • Shops (47 per cent)
  • Cafes or restaurants (45 per cent)
  • School or tertiary studies (44 per cent)
  • Sports, exercise or gyms (44 per cent).

This survey was co-designed with the Youth Engagement Team, a group of 15 young people aged 18–25 (you can see them in the photo at the top of the page).
